To arrive at the best decision thus it is necessary to ensure that such prejudices and stereotypes are not the factors impacting our decisions and we need to thin slice effectively to get the benefits of snap judgment. Also at times the situation and our biological adaptation to that makes us takes the wrong decision. He informs us how we have at time biases or stereotypes that can play an important part in rapid cognition and thus we can take wrong decisions. While he argues that snap judgment has its merits he also provides a counter view of this as to when we need to be careful with regard to snap judgments. To this, he adds the concept of thin slicing by which our brain deletes the unnecessary details and based on past experiences helps us come at rapid decisions and judgments. The main premise that Malcolm Gladwell uses is adaptive unconscious which is a part of our brain that leads to rapid cognition. Later on, the sculpture really turned out to be fake.
But one art historian just glanced at it and knew it was fake. All necessary tests were done to ascertain this and the claim seemed correct.
The book starts with a story of how a museum got a sculpture which they believed to be rare belonging to the sixth century. In this book, Malcolm Gladwell suggests how at times it is snap judgment which is often more effective than well calculated and thought out judgments. Also from these narratives, he derives his conclusions or arguments which makes them interesting and a delightful read. Though they are all non-fiction dealing with management or understanding certain patterns, Malcolm makes it interesting as he uses many examples which are in the form of stories in his narrative. Malcolm Gladwell is one of those authors whose books I really love.
